BMW M8 MotoGP Safety Car revealed

BMW has unveiled its replacement for the current M5 MotoGP Safety Car, kitting out the new M8 Competition for official duties.

Based on the recently-revealed M8 Competition, the MotoGP safety car has been treated to a set of M Performance upgrades to make sure it's capable of holding a field of furious two-wheelers at bay.

For starters, the bonnet has a proper motorsports lock on it, and the engineers at M GmbH have fitted a fuel suction pump, a battery master switch, a fire extinguisher and bracket, and a proper roll cage inside. Gone are the standard seats, replaced with Recaro buckets and four-point harnesses.

As you'd expect, the exterior has been covered in red, white and blue stickers, while the roof is home to a set of flashing lights. They're controlled by a row of rocker switches at the base of the centre console.

Along with the performance-focused changes, the BMW team has gone wild with the M Performance parts catalogue, giving the MotoGP M8 a smattering of carbon add-ons.

The exhaust tips are covered in carbon-fibre, along with the engine cover, rear diffuser, side skirts, steering wheel centre and paddles. The towering rear wing has been nicked from the M8 GTE racer, while the sticky Michelin Cup tyres are designed to offer bags of grip on the track.

Power in the M8 Competition comes from the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 used in the M5, making 460kW and 750Nm. It's put to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and switchable xDrive system.

The M8 Competition will be on-sale in Australia from early in 2020 – albeit without the racy stripes and giant wing.
