Mini builds 10 millionth vehicle
Mini has produced its 10 millionth vehicle at its plant in Oxford, England.
The milestone vehicle was a three-door 60 Years Edition model, and during a ceremony at the factory it was put face to face with a Mini made in the first year of production, 1959.
The original Mini was sold by a number of brands owned by the British Motor Corporation, and later British Leyland and the Rover Group. These included Austin, Morris, Leyland, Riley, Rover, and Wolseley.
Around 5.3 million copies of the original Mini were sold between 1959 and 2000.
BMW, which had owned the Rover Group since 1994, sold MG and Rover to the Phoenix Consortium for £10 ($17), and offloaded Land Rover to Ford for £1.8 billion ($3.2 billion).
A year later it began producing an all-new three-door Mini at the Oxford plant. More varieties were added over the years, with the current range featuring a convertible, a five-door hatch, Clubman wagon, and Countryman crossover.
Variants which proved less popular include the coupe, the Clubvan, roadster, and Paceman three-door crossover, all of which are no longer produced.
According to BMW, around 400,000 Mini vehicles were made in 2018. The hatches and Clubman are currently made in Oxford, with the convertible and Countryman contracted out to VDL NedCar in the Netherlands.
