2021 BMW 5 Series Touring spied again

The facelifted 5er wagon has been snapped in Europe on the back of a truck with 3 Series-inspired design changes.

The facelifted BMW 5 Series Touring has been spied again, this time on the back of a vehicle-carrier truck in Europe.

Compared to the prototype spotted a month ago, this vehicle appears to be a regular combustion-powered version, as there's no charge port like the previously seen plug-in hybrid model.

Swirly black-and-white camouflage adorns the front and rear fascias, where the noticeable design changes will be made. The headlights, grille and bumper are all expected to be revised and bring the new 5 Series in line with BMW's latest models.

The tail-lights on this car are different to the vehicle spied last month, too, appearing slimmer than the current model's and more in line with the design of the new-generation 3 Series Touring – which hits Aussie showrooms in October.

Less substantial changes will be made inside, likely limited to revised material and trim options, along with the wider rollout of the BMW OS7.0 connected infotainment system – currently, the limited-run M5 Edition 35 Years is the only known 5 Series variant to get the new infotainment interface globally.

Beyond the changes to the exterior and cabin, the 5er's powertrain family will likely get tweaks to keep them in line with the latest European emissions regulations, and an upgraded suite of semi-autonomous driver assistance systems.

The updated 5 Series will likely be revealed late this year or early next, ahead of a market launch in the second half of 2020.
