2021 BMW i4 spied again

The BMW i4 has been snapped by photographers once again, this time during hot weather testing in sunny Europe.

Plenty of black-and-white camouflage adorns the body of this all-electric prototype, so it's hard to see the details of the final design underneath.

We can see, however, that the i4 will be very closely linked to the next-generation 4 Series Gran Coupe, in fact it could well be just an EV variant of the new four-door coupe range – much like how the iX3 is essentially an electric X3 crossover.

Some differences between the combustion-powered 4 Series and i4 can be seen here, though, like the closed double-kidney grille which the company puts on its electric vehicles, along with unique door handles that sit more flush with the bodywork for enhanced aerodynamic efficiency.

Given its close ties to the new-generation 4 Series, itself related to the new 3 Series sedan and Touring wagon, we can expect the i4 to offer BMW's latest interior design incorporating BMW OS7.0 infotainment and a full suite of semi-autonomous driver assistance technologies.

The i4 will be based on BMW's modular CLAR architecture which already underpins several models including the 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series, which has been developed to accommodate petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains.

In March BMW said the i4 will have a driving range of more than 600km on the WLTP testing cycle, whilst also being capable of hitting 100km/h from a standstill in just 4.0 seconds.

As for timing, the i4 will likely be revealed in production form sometime in the latter half of next year, before commencing production at BMW's Munich plant in 2021. Stay tuned to CarAdvice for all the latest, and click on the images for the full gallery.
