2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe pricing and specs

BMW Australia has confirmed the first-ever 8 Series Gran Coupe will land in local showrooms before the end of the year, set to kick off a smidgen under $200,000.

Joining the related 8 Series Coupe and Convertible, the Gran Coupe will also be offered with two engines/trim levels, mirroring the two-door line-up, though the starting prices for both models is $3000 less than the equivalent 8 Series Coupe.

Kicking off proceedings is the 840i Gran Coupe, priced from $199,900 plus on-road costs, powered by the company's familiar 250kW/500Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six mated to an eight-speed sports automatic with paddles.

Standard equipment for the 'entry-level' four-door 8er includes the M Sport package, 20-inch M light alloys in bi-colour finish with runflat tyres, adaptive M suspension, M Sport brakes, the M Sport rear differential, soft-close doors, the BMW Display Key, Driving Assistant Professional and Parking Assistant Plus tech packages, laser headlights, a panoramic glass sunroof, keyless entry and push-button start.

There's also BMW OS7.0 incorporating a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch central touchscreen with gesture control, heated and ventilated front seats, wireless smartphone charging, a 16-speaker harman/kardon surround sound system, 'Merino' extended leather upholstery, electric roller sunblinds, and multifunctional front seats with lumbar support.

Compared to its two-door brethren, the 8 Series Gran Coupe scores a standard 4+1 seating arrangement with two integrated rear sports seats, which also fold 40:20:40. With the rear seats in place, there's 440L of cargo capacity.

BMW claims the rear-driven 840i Gran Coupe can dash from 0-100 in 5.2 seconds, while fuel use remains unrated at this stage.

Sitting atop of the range, at least for now, is the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe, priced from $272,900 plus on-road costs.

Headlining the specification upgrades is a stonking 390kW/750Nm 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, which sends drive to a rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive system via an eight-speed automatic.

Also part of the M850i package is M tuning "on selected elements", Adaptive M Suspension Professional with active-roll stabilisation, 20-inch M light alloy wheels with performance tyres, BMW 'CraftedClarity' glass ornamentation, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian detection, larger 395mm M Sport brakes (up from 374mm in the 840i), and a tyre pressure indicator.

The M Performance variant claims a 3.9-second sprint to triple figures, with fuel use also unrated for the time bring.

As with all BMW models, the 8 Series Gran Coupe will also be available with a range of single-item options and packages, including a M Carbon Exterior package that brings carbon-fibre reinforced plastic components for elements like the mirrors, tailpipes and air curtains – pricing is still to be announced.
