Infiniti QX55 name trademarked in the US and Canada

Nissan has registered the Infiniti QX55 name with the US Patent and Trademark Office, as well as the Canadian Trademark Database.

The filings were made in June and discovered by Autoguide, and hint at a new model to slot into the brand's range. It's not clear if this model, if it eventuates, will be a North American exclusive or whether it will be sold in other parts of the world.

Although we have nothing but gut feel to go on, this new nameplate could be used for a "coupe" version of the QX50.

While Infiniti has branded the coupe version of the Q50 as the Q60, the company isn't able to apply the same pattern to a less practical variant of the QX50, as the QX60 badge is already used for a restyled Nissan Pathfinder.

It's also possible the QX55 could be a long wheelbase version of the 4694mm QX50. There's certainly a large enough size gap between it and the 5083mm QX60 to justify another model, but such a car may pinch a few too many sales from the larger car, especially if it's offered with a third row of seats.

Autoguide speculates the badge could be used for a high performance variant of the QX50, but this would seemingly break the logic, such as it is, of Infiniti's naming structure.

Adding another crossover vehicle to its lineup should provide a nice boost to a brand which has had a tough year. In March, the marque announced it would end production of the Q30 and QX30 crossovers, as well as pull out of the western European market by 2020.

In May, Infiniti's chief executive Christian Meunier left the company to head up the Jeep brand at rival Fiat Chrysler.
