2020 Alpina XB7/XD7 spied

Alpina's version of the BMW X7 looks pretty close to production, and it sounds like both petrol and diesel versions could be offered depending on market.

Photographers have snapped a BMW X7-based prototype believed to be the upcoming Alpina XB7 or XD7, ahead of a potential debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

It's no secret the tuning firm is working on a new model based on BMW's three-row SUV – Alpina's boss confirmed it last month – and this development vehicle is our clearest look yet.

The X7 you see here is finished in what looks to be Alpina Blue, and equipped with the company's signature subtle body add-ons that lend a muscular yet understated aesthetic.

We can see larger intakes up front to feed the air-hungry engine that lurks beneath the bonnet – more on that in a bit – while the signature quad-tipped exhaust pipes stick out of a revised rear bumper.

There's also large alloy wheels covering massive brakes front and rear, to help the XB7/XD7 stop as quickly as it can go.

At this stage there's no shots of the interior, but expect the Alpina X7 to get a range of special items like blue dials with red needles, lashings of Lavalina leather (likely optional), and Alpina badging.

As for what will power the Alpina-fettled X7, it's believed there will be two versions offered globally – the XB7 and the XD7.

The 'B' signifies a bi-turbo petrol, while the 'D' refers to a high-powered diesel. It's reported the XB7 will be destined for North America, while the XD7 will serve the European market.

Power in the XB7 will likely come from the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 in the 7 Series-based B7 xDrive, which develops a meaty 447kW of power and 800Nm of torque.

Meanwhile, an XD7 will draw upon a tuned version of the 3.0-litre quad-turbo inline six diesel that powers the X7 M50d xDrive (below) , which makes 294kW and 760Nm in 'standard' trim.

There's no official word on when we can expect Alpina's version of the BMW X7 to make its debut, though it's possible it could be revealed as early as the Frankfurt motor show in September.
