BMW M2 ‘GT4’ teased

BMW M Motorsport has previewed a new 'entry-level' race car for 'grassroots motorsport' based on the M2 Competition.

We've unofficially dubbed it as the 'M2 GT4', given the racing class' entry-level positioning in FIA competitions and the overall look of the track car, which doesn't appear too modified from the standard road-going version.

The M2 GT4 is scheduled to make its motorsport debut at the Nurburgring Nordschleife for the VLN Endurance Championship on August 3, piloted by BMW Motorsport junior Beitske Visser of the Netherlands and BMW M test engineer Jörg Weidinger of Germany.

BMW says the race car will don a "special camouflage livery" for the six-hour race, likely to be the one you see pictured here.

"The race on the Nordschleife is the next step in the intense test phase. The new car has already completed successful tests at Miramas (FRA) and Portimão (POR) in recent weeks and months," BMW says in its press release.

"There will be a Racing and a Clubsport variant of the new entry-level model for motor racing, to appeal to more potential amateur racing drivers than with its predecessor, the BMW M240i Racing."

"A Permit B version of the car is planned for use on the Nordschleife within the VLN," the company added.

The first customer versions of the new M2-based track car will be delivered in the second quarter of 2020.
