Ford has confirmed the Mustang High Performance will replace the unloved EcoBoost in Australia, with more power from its four-cylinder turbocharged engine.

The pricier Mustang GT V8 dominates sales in Australia, accounting for 80 per cent of registrations. Ford will be hoping the more powerful High Performance four-cylinder is a stronger seller, and drive the Mustang to new heights on the sales charts when it arrives in February.

“With distinctive looks, increased equipment level and bold colour choices, the turbocharged model is a welcome addition to the line-up, bringing a freshness to the range while still being pure Mustang," said Kay Hart, Ford Australia managing director.

Thanks the 63mm twin-scroll turbocharger from the Focus RS, a new radiator, and a fresh engine calibration, the High Performance now delivers 236kW and 448Nm, up 12kW and 7Nm on the current Mustang EcoBoost.

With 90 per cent of peak torque on tap between 2500rpm and 5300rpm, the engineers at Ford say the engine revisions mean the turbo'd Pony has more in-gear punch. Coupled with shorter gear ratios than the existing four-pot Mustang, the power boost means the 100km/h sprint should be dispatched in less than 5.0 seconds.

Along with its power upgrades, the High Performance has been treated to a new variable sports exhaust system, four-piston Brembo brakes on the front axle, a limited-slip rear differential and tweaked steering. The car's stabiliser bars are stiffer, too.

A set of 19-inch machined wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres (wider at the rear) is standard. Ford has fitted a unique grille, the splitter from the GT, and a smattering of grey trim pieces to help the High Performance stand out, too. The range of new colours offered on the V8 will also be available to High Performance buyers.

Standard equipment levels will largely mirror those of the current EcoBoost. Leather seats are standard, but a set of Recaro pews (also leather-wrapped) is available. The centre console houses an 8.0-inch touchscreen running Sync 3, complete with factory navigation, a reversing camera and smartphone mirroring.

The first four years worth of scheduled services will cost a maximum of $299 under the Ford Service Benefits program. Pricing for the car will be announced closer to the High Performance's arrival in Australia.
