MG ZS EV racks up 1000 orders in the UK

The all-electric MG ZS EV has seen 'unprecedented' demand in the UK, achieving 1000 orders within the space of two weeks.

Priced from £21,495 ($38,106) after the British government's £3500 ($6205) plug-in vehicle grant, the ZS EV will offer a driving range of 163 miles (262km) on the WLTP test cycle when first deliveries commence in the UK in September.

With its suite of driver assistance systems, seating for five and large boot, MG says the electric ZS "is a real-world electric car for real-world people".

The first 1000 retail customers who have already ordered their MG ZS EV will also get a complementary home charging unit.

"We know that the canny British public can tell a bargain when they see one, but we’ve been blown away by the number of people who’ve moved quickly to secure an electric MG ZS at the launch price of £21,495," said Daniel Gregorious, head of sales and marketing at MG UK.

"By extending our offer to match the government grant for the next 1000 retail customers, we’re delighted to be able to maintain this offer, even if it’s just for a few more days. To anyone who’s been thinking about ordering a ZS EV, I suggest they do it now."

The offer in question is the continuation of the ZS EV's £21,495 starting price after applying the £3500 MG Grant, matching the government incentive to further drive the early take-up of the zero-emissions vehicles.

Power in the ZS EV comes from a 110kW/350Nm electric motor on the front axle, hooked up to a 45.6kWh battery pack. While the stricter WLTP cycle rates the range at around 262km per charge, the ZS EV was certified for 335km on the older NEDC cycle at its Chinese launch.

MG’s city-focused crossover has an AC charging time of six hours but more can also be charged from empty to 80 per cent on a DC fast charger in 30 minutes. It also sprints from 0-50km/h in 3.1 seconds.

Due in Australia sometime in 2020, the ZS EV is expected to kick off around the $40,000 when it lobs Down Under, undercutting rivals like the Hyundai Kona Electric and Nissan Leaf.

The company hasn't confirmed specifications for our market just yet, though standard specification in China includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, keyless entry, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning and AEB.

MG's local sales continue to climb, too, up 207.3 per cent in June and 282.9 per cent year-to-date as of June 30.

A driving force for the brand Down Under is in fact the ZS crossover, which saw 486 registrations for the duration of June and is sitting  at 1752 sales to June 30 – up 89.1 per cent and 191 per cent respectively.

In the small SUV segment, the Chinese-built ZS already outsells the likes of the Ford Ecosport, Jeep Compass, Nissan Juke, and Suzuki Ignis/Jimny/S-Cross, and is quickly catching up to the Holden Trax and Suzuki Vitara.
