Tesla pickup reveal coming in ‘2 or 3 months’

Tesla's first light-commercial vehicle, the as-yet unnamed pickup, could launch before the end of October.

Using his preferred method of sharing details, Twitter, Elon Musk said Tesla is "close" to having the pickup ready, but "the magic is in the final details".

The reveal is "maybe 2 to 3 months" away, Musk said.

Tesla has revealed precious few details about its upcoming Ford F-150 EV and Rivian R1T rival. It's expected to cost less than US$50,000 ($72,000) and be capable of towing 136 tonnes – although how that will translate to real-world tow ratings remains to be seen.

Musk has also hinted at a range between 650km and 800km, which would suggest the pickup will have a battery significantly larger than 100kWh.

Rivian has positioned itself as a leader in the electric light-commercial space, promising to offer the R1T dual-cab ute in Australia by 2022. With a range of 643km and claimed towing capacity of 4500kg, the R1T has a towing capacity north of those offered by the conventional internal-combustion dual-cab utes offered at the moment.
