2021 Volkswagen ID. Crozz spied

The first images of the German brand's all-electric SUV have surfaced ahead of a likely reveal next year.

Photographers have snapped the upcoming Volkswagen ID. Crozz during development testing in Europe, ahead of its global market launch sometime during 2020.

Where the ID.3 hatchback will be around the same size as a Golf, the ID. Crozz is said to be similar in physical dimensions to the popular Tiguan – slotting somewhere between the TIguan and Tiguan Allspace.

First revealed in concept form at the 2017 Shanghai motor show, the ID. Crozz will be based on the Volkswagen Group's flexible MEB electric vehicle architecture, offering a high-output dual-motor powertrain with an anticipated range of around 500 kilometres.

Despite the heavy camouflage, we can see Volkswagen has stayed relatively true to the ID. Crozz's overall design, though we can see the roofline of the production model will be far more conventional and wagon-like as opposed to the coupe look of the concept version (above).

Expect signature 'ID.' design cues to feature, including a clean front fascia with no conventional grille, and a contrasting insert between the tail-lights which is less prominent than the black accent adorning the concept version.

As noted above, the ID. Crozz will be available with a dual-motor electric powertrain, likely developing around 225kW like the concept.

A range of semi-autonomous driver assistance technologies will be available, as Volkswagen works to make its vehicles capable of driverless operation, along with a digital-heavy cabin layout with large displays and connected infotainment functions.

There's promise of a 150kW fast-charging system that should replenish 80 per cent of the battery in 30 minutes, too.

Given the lack of a conventional engine and driveshaft, the ID. Crozz should offer heaps of space inside for passengers and luggage, which should give it the cabin volume equivalent to the larger Touareg despite being dimensionally similar to the Tiguan.
