2020 Porsche 911 Carrera revealed, here late 2019

Porsche has finally unveiled the base 911 Carrera, with detuned version of the Carrera S's twin-turbo flat-six engine and a starting price of $229,500 before on-road costs.

That's just over $2000 more than the previous-generation 911 Carrera with a PDK, although the new car justifies its minor price rise with a more upmarket interior, more power than before, and a range of new driver technologies.

That's just over $2000 more than the previous-generation 911 Carrera with a PDK, although the new car justifies its minor price rise with a more upmarket interior, more power than before, and a range of new driver technologies.

Like the 911 Carrera S revealed in Los Angeles last year, the new 911 Carrera is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre flat-six. But it's been detuned to make 283kW of power and 450Nm of torque – up 15kW on the outgoing base model, but down 58kW on the Carrera S.

Porsche says you can blame smaller turbo compressors for the slightly lower power output. The sprint to 100km/h takes 4.2 seconds (4.0 seconds with Sport Chrono specced) with the eight-speed PDK transmission, and top speed is 293km/h.

Porsche claims 9.0L/100km on the combined cycle for the 911 Coupe and 9.2L/100km for the Cabriolet, although those figures were obtained on the more lenient NEDC test cycle.

Standard equipment includes a set of 19-inch alloy wheels on the front axle wrapped in 235/40 ZR tyres, and 20-inch alloys with 295/35 ZR tyres on the rear axle, while stopping is handled by 330mm brake discs with four-piston calipers.

Despite the similarities between the Carrera and Carrera S, there are a few ways to set them apart: the former has smaller wheels and brakes, and 'individual tailpipe covers' on the exhaust. It's only available as a widebody, however, as with the entire 'new' 911 range.

Inside, the Carrera is offered standard with the same 10.9-inch touchscreen display in the middle of its dashboard, with the same five-dial setup in front of the driver.

The same array of driver assists will also be offered on both the Carrera and Carrera S. Wet Mode, a system that detects when there's water on the road and adjusts the driver assists accordingly, will be offered.

In Australia, standard equipment will include lane-change assist, heated 14-way 'comfort' front seats, the Bose surround sound system, DAB radio, keyless entry and start, metallic paint, a reversing camera and auto-dimming mirrors.

It'll be here in the fourth quarter of 2019, with the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 to follow soon.
