2020 Mercedes-AMG A45 10-plus seconds quicker around Nürburgring than predecessor

More power doesn't always mean massive gains in performance, but when you throw in a few more tricks...

The new 2020 Mercedes-AMG A45 is at least 10 seconds quicker around the infamous Nürburgring race circuit than its predecessor, thanks to its more powerful engine and advanced all-wheel drive system.

Although Mercedes-AMG representatives would not confirm an actual time, they admitted the car’s ability to lap the famous 'green hell' was at least 10 seconds quicker than its predecessor (which is known to have achieved a lap time around 8:04 seconds).

The new A45 uses the world’s most powerful production 2.0-litre engine, developing 310kW of power and 500Nm of torque which gives the ultra-hot hatch a 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds.

That compares favourably to the previous car's 280kW and 475Nm and 0-100km/h dash of 4.2 seconds.

Despite the power differences, the new A45’s fully variable AWD 4matic+ system with torque control plays a big role in the car’s uprated performance and Nurburgring achievement.

The new rear axle makes use of two electronically controlled multi-disc clutches, each connected to one rear axle driveshaft.

This allows the computers in the A45 to decide not only whether to send the might of the engine to the front or rear, but also which wheel at the rear end.

Apart from allowing for better cornering, the ability to send most of the torque to the left or right rear wheels allows the enabling of drift mode. Watch a video of that on our facebook page here.

Another performance upgrade for the A45 is the all-new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, which believe it or not, is taken from a B-Class diesel (with extensive modifications), that allows for quicker gearshifts and also comes with the ability to handle significantly more torque than before.

With all these aspects put together, the new A45’s yet-to-be-released Nürburgring lap time is expected to be a significant improvement over the previous model.

The track times were set on Cup tyres (instead of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S fitted as standard), which will be offered as an option in due time.

How powerful is the new 2020 Mercedes-AMG A45?

The new Mercedes-AMG is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, developing 310kW of power and 500Nm of torque, which gives the ultra-hot hatch a 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds.
