2020 Skoda Octavia spied inside and out

It's heavily disguised, but the next-generation Octavia will get a more grown-up design and a tech-heavy interior.

Skoda’s fourth-generation Octavia wagon has been spied testing in Europe, ahead of a likely unveil at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

The development vehicle spotted in the mountains was dressed in a plethora of fake panels, concealing the final design without drawing excess attention like a conventional prototype might.

Despite Skoda’s best efforts, we can tell the latest Octavia will have a more refined design than its predecessor, with sleek LED headlights, a large front grille and sharper body lines.

This latest round of spy shots offers us a first glimpse inside the cabin, where the current model’s low-mounted infotainment screen has been replaced with a dual-screen setup similar to what we've seen in the Scala.

There’s actually a small image of the next Octavia devoid of any camouflage in the centre of the display, though its low resolution prevents us from gleaning any additional details about the wagon’s styling.

In front of the driver there appears to be a version of Skoda’s Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster, while the gear selector and switchgear below the infotainment screen are all-new.

The next-generation Octavia, set to enter production in late 2019 or early 2020, will ride on a moderately-revised version of the Volkswagen Group’s MQB architecture, likely dubbed ‘MQB Evo’, alongside the next Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3 and Seat Leon.

The car will also grow considerably in size, as the arrival of the smaller Scala means it no longer has to straddle segments.

Expect the latest crop of petrol and diesel engines are expected to feature under the bonnet of the Czech family car, in addition to 48-volt and plug-in hybrid options. The list of available safety technology is also likely to receive an upgrade.

The 2020 Skoda Octavia is expected to be revealed at the Frankfurt motor show in September. Skoda Australia’s head of communications, Paul Pottinger, confirmed to CarAdvice in March that the liftback and wagon should touch down locally in the first quarter of 2021.
