Ford has upped the pressure on its ute-based SUV rivals, adding potentially life-saving autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and pedestrian detection technology to its entire 2019 Everest range.
Although the Pajero Sport offers AEB across the range, the best-selling Isuzu MU-X doesn't offer the technology at all. Both the Trailblazer and Fortuner miss out as well, although the Holden does get forward-collision warning.
Previously reserved for more expensive Titanium and Trend models, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beam are now standard on the two-wheel drive Everest Ambiente, priced from $49,490 (+$400) before on-road costs.
Moving up to the four-wheel drive Ambiente bumps the price to $54,490 (+$400) before on-roads, with power exclusively from a 3.2-litre turbo-diesel engine.
The mid-spec Trend is offered in rear-wheel drive with the bi-turbo diesel engine and 10-speed automatic debuted in the Ranger Raptor ($56,190 before on-roads), all-wheel drive with the bi-turbo ($61,490) and all-wheel drive with the Ranger's five-cylinder, 3.2-litre turbo-diesel and a six-speed automatic ($59,990).
The range-topping Titanium is available exclusively with the bi-turbo engine and 10-speed automatic. It's been treated to a $1700 price cut, with a recommended list price of $72,290 before on-road costs for 2019.
Standard equipment includes 20-inch alloy wheels, a tow bar (rated 3100kg), a leather-trimmed handbrake, and semi-automated parking assistant.
Over the lower-grade cars, it also gains chrome running boards, chrome door handles and exterior mirrors, a power sunroof, heated front seats, eight-way electric passenger seat adjustment, ambient interior lighting, rear cross-traffic alert, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
The updated Everest is available in dealerships now.
