2020 BMW 5 Series spied

The new 5er has been snapped in the open again, this time as a hybrid sedan.

The 2020 BMW 5 Series facelift has once again been spied, this time in sedan guise.

As with the Touring we spied last week, the new 5 Series sedan wears what appears to be a mildly-revised front end. The lights have been reworked to feature a signature in keeping with the latest 3 Series, while the kidney grille is heavily camouflaged.

Given the size of the panels on the front, we'd suggest the 5er's nose will grow to match the linked unit on the new 1 Series, X5 and X7. We'd also suggest the lower air intakes and bumpers will be nipped and tucked, as is BMW's wont in its Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) updates.

Down back, we're expecting small detail updates to the 5 Series design, but nothing too wild. The bumpers are likely to come in for some attention, and the exhaust pipes on these test vehicles are new as well.

The lights are also likely to get revised graphics for 2020, but BMW has done a good job hiding exactly what will change with zebra tape. Stay tuned for more on that one.

Under the skin, the 5 Series is likely to get a range of updated powertrains, including the plug-in hybrid powertrain featured in the 745e xDrive. This test mule, with its charge port and 'hybrid test vehicle' stickers, is clearly an electrified tester of some variety.

The new 5 Series is expected to make its debut late in 2020 or early in 2021.
