2020 BMW 4 Series spied

The new 4er blends a 3 Series front end with a slick, coupe rear. It's heavily camouflaged at the moment, but a full reveal is expected later this year.

BMW’s upcoming competitor to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, the 4 Series, has been spied in transit on a truck in Germany.

While most of the coupe’s finer styling details are concealed under swirled camouflage, it’s evident the new 4 Series will adapt the latest 3 Series design language to a more dynamic body style.

From the a-pillar forward, the two-door will be mostly unchanged from the related sedan, with the vehicle spied here believed to be an M Sport model with sportier air intakes and large alloy wheels.

The bodywork is all new beyond that point, with a sloping roofline leading into a subtle boot-lip spoiler. The taillights appear to be similar to those on the 3 Series, while dual exhaust tips feature at the bottom of the bumper.

No shots of the interior were captured, but it’s likely to be identical to the recently-spied 4 Series Convertible and new 3er, with a large central touchscreen running OS7.0 and a fully-digital instrument cluster.

Under the bonnet, the similarities with its sedan and drop-top siblings are likely to continue, with the powertrain range expected to consist of four and six-cylinder petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid options with power outputs up to 215kW.

The performance flagship at launch is expected to be the all-wheel-drive, 275kW/500Nm 3.0-litre turbo inline-six M440i xDrive, with the full-fat M4 arriving at a later date with up to 375kW and 600Nm from its S58 twin-turbo six.

The new BMW 4 Series Coupe is expected to be revealed later in 2019, ahead of the M4’s launch in 2020.
