2020 Chevrolet Corvette: Steering wheel unveiled ahead of Friday’s full reveal

Chevrolet has taken an unusual approach with the C8's steering wheel, opting for a two-spoke design.

Chevrolet has unveiled the 2020 C8 Corvette’s steering wheel, ahead of the car’s full debut on Friday.

Only a single image was released by the American carmaker, but there are a number of details that can be gleaned.

The wheel is a two-spoke unit – a rare sight among cars today – with a squared-off design Chevrolet claims “enhances visibility and comfort”.

The upper section of the wheel features a black 12 o’clock marker, complemented by stitching that's likely to be available in a range of hues.

UPDATE: The new Corvette has now been revealed, and confirmed for Australia. Click the links for the full story.

The centre section of the wheel wears a narrower, more modern Corvette emblem than previous iterations, flanked by sets of black buttons for volume, cruise control and other infotainment and driving functions.

The presence of metallic paddle shifters appears to confirm that the eighth-generation C8 Corvette will launch with an automatic transmission as standard, likely the Tremec-built seven-speed unit rumoured in April.

In base ‘Stingray’ trim, it's expected to be powered by a revised version of the 6.2-litre V8 offered in the current ‘Vette, tuned to produce around 500 horsepower (373kW).

Chevrolet also released a short, 15-second exhaust clip of the upcoming sports car, highlighting its gruff, aggressive soundtrack akin to the tone produced by the aforementioned LT-coded V8.

All rumours will be quashed later this week, when Chevrolet officially takes the covers off the 2020 Corvette at an event in California. The livestream will begin on Friday at 12:30pm AEST.
