Skoda Kamiq commences production

The all-new Skoda Kamiq has started rolling down the production line at the company’s main factory in Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic, ahead of its Australian introduction early next year.

Due to hit European markets in the coming months, the Kamiq serves as the third member of Skoda’s global SUV family, slotting under the larger Karoq and Kodiaq crossovers.

At Mladá Boleslav, the Kamiq is assembled alongside the Octavia, Fabia, Scala and Karoq, with Skoda investing some €100 million ($160.59m) in adapting its production line for the new crossover.

The company says the Kamiq will be produced at a rate of 400 units a day.

“Over the past few months, we have made all of the provisions in production and logistics to successfully launch the Kamiq in the city SUV segment,” said Michael Oeljeklaus, Skoda board member for production and logistics.

“We are convinced that – in typical Skoda style – the Kamiq too will impress our customers with its excellent quality and many practical features.”

Following its reveal at the Geneva motor show earlier this year, the Kamiq is scheduled to arrive in Australian showrooms late in the first quarter of 2020, shortly after the related Scala hatchback and around the same time as the also-related Volkswagen T-Roc.

When it does land Down Under, the Kamiq will be up against stiff competition from the burgeoning small SUV segment – the fourth highest-volume vehicle class behind Medium SUVs, 4x4 Utes, and Small Cars, while accounting for roughly 13 per cent of overall sales locally.

Key competitors in the Australian market include the top-selling Mitsubishi ASX and Mazda CX-3, along with the likes of the Honda HR-V and Nissan Qashqai.
