2020 BMW M4 Convertible spied
BMW's next-generation fast drop-top has been spotted for the first time, ahead of a likely 2020 debut.
Photographers have snapped the new BMW M4 Convertible this week, giving us a first look at the next generation of the marque’s hot ragtop.
While the design changes are a little difficult to see thanks to the heavy camouflage and pre-production panels, one of the biggest differences between this car and the model currently on sale is indeed the soft top, with BMW electing to employ a folding fabric roof compared to the metal unit used on today’s 4 Series.
The fabric roof will be lighter, and take up less space in the boot than the current model’s folding metal top. As a result, the new M4 should be less compromised in terms of handling compared to the coupe, and offer better luggage capacity with the roof down.
Given its shared underpinnings with the 3 Series range and upcoming M3, the new M4 coupe and convertible will draw from a new ‘S58’ twin-turbocharged inline six, which is said to be 95 per cent different to the engine in the current model, that will be paired with a torque converter automatic instead of the dual-clutch self-shifter in the current model.
The new M3 and M4 should also offer the option of all-wheel drive, and develop somewhere between 375kW and 400kW depending on variant.
Expect several variants to be offered depending on body type, too, including Pure, Competition and CS models.
Timing wise, the new M3 and M4 won’t be revealed until next year, potentially at the Geneva motor show in March. Expect an Australian release before the end of the year, given our high uptake of BMW M cars, and performance cars in general.
