Extreme E: Electric off-road series coming soon

Formula E will get an off-road counterpart, with the Extreme E championship revealing the car it'll use in its first season.

Brainchild of Alejandro Agag, the man behind Formula E, the Extreme E car has been developed by Spark Racing Technologies to "face all the variations in surface and terrain that will be thrown its way, which will include gravel, rock, mud, ice, snow, water and sand".

Dubbed the Odyssey 21, it's only a show car at the moment, but we know everyone competing in the series will rely on a control chassis and battery pack from Williams Advanced Engineering. That's a contrast with the Formula E racer, which has a battery from McLaren Advanced Technologies.

Electric motors will be developed in-house by individual teams, which will also be able to tweak the car's bodywork to their liking.

Power on the car shown at Goodwood came from a 400kW electric motor, good for a 4.5-second sprint to 100km/h. Testing will begin in September, with deliveries to the competing teams slated for March 2020. The first season is expected to start early in 2021.

The series format hasn't been confirmed, but organisers have mooted a knockout tournament format in the Arctic, along with the Himalayas and Sahara Desert.

"The Extreme E-SUV, Odyssey 21, is unlike anything else in motorsport. The cutting-edge technology our industry-leading partners have employed in its design and construction has resulted in a stunning car, capable of the highest performance in the toughest and most varied environments on the planet," said Alejandro Agag, founder of Extreme E.

“Extreme E’s combination of top-level sporting competition and ultra-demanding environments will also prove to be a significant research and development platform for manufacturers, driving further advancements in sustainable mobility."
