Genesis Motors is pushing forward with its upcoming SUV rollout, with the company’s chief operating officer confirming a G70-based crossover will follow the upcoming GV80 in 2021.
Speaking on a sales call with North American media reported by Motor1, Erwin Raphael, COO for Genesis, said a smaller SUV based on the G70’s rear-drive platform will be a little under a year behind the larger GV80.
“We're very excited to introduce the GV80 about 11 months from now. Next May/June,” he said.
“Then maybe 10 or 11 months after that, a compact crossover SUV built on the G70 platform.”
No further details were divulged, though we can make a few educated guesses based on our knowledge of the G70 that recently launched in Australia.

Given its shared architecture with the G70, we can also expect 180kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo and 272kW 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engines to be offered, meaning the GV70 (or whatever it’ll be called) should pack quite a punch. We don’t reckon the G70’s six-speed manual option overseas will carryover to the SUV version, however.
Rivals will include the top-selling Mercedes-Benz GLC, the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Volvo XC60. The shared underpinnings with the G70 (and Kia Stinger) should mean the GV70 will handle rather well, too, potentially making it a left-field competitor to sportier Euro premium offerings like the aforementioned X3, the Jaguar F-Pace, and Porsche Macan.
The Genesis GV70 will become the fifth member of the Genesis line-up globally, joining the current G70, G80 and G90 sedans, along with the upcoming GV80. A sixth model is meant to be in the pipeline for reveal sometime between now and 2021, and we’re not sure if it’ll be the promised “near-luxury sport coupe” as mentioned in a leaked product roadmap in 2016, or whether we’ll see a production version of the all-electric Mint concept revealed at the New York motor show in April.
Genesis Motors Australia has already confirmed its plans to introduce its first SUV in 2020 – likely to be the GV80 – as part of its range and dealer network expansion.
