BAC Mono R revealed

BAC has made its single-seat Mono supercar even lighter, and even more powerful, using the Goodwood Festival of Speed to unveil the Mono R.

Although it has a similarly unique design to the original Mono, the R wads into battle weighing 555kg, 25kg less than before. That doesn't sound like much, but it's just under five per cent of the car's total weight.

The 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine has been fettled by Mountune, and delivers another 35hp (26kW) to the rear wheels for a peak of 255kW. Redline is up from 7800rpm to 8800rpm, thanks to upgrades like a new throttle body, revised cylinder head, and motorsports-style pod air intake.

Externally, that pod air intake is one of the key differences between the Mono and Mono R. The nose is now a bit slimmer and sharkier, and the LED headlights have been made smaller for more efficient aerodynamics.

Under the skin, there are new two-way adjustable dampers, working with a revised suspension setup designed to reduce dive and squat. The fuel tank is larger than before, and the battery has been moved to a more central position.

Down back, there are new LED tail-lights and a slimmer bodywork design, while that racy pod intake sits proud of the bodywork. The car is actually 20mm longer and 25mm lower than stock, which helps make it look a bit more dramatic than before. It's unique, there's no doubt about that.

Just 30 examples of the Mono R will be built, all for existing BAC customers. They're all sold out, so put away that chequebook.

"This car is the ultimate benchmark-setter in terms of design, engineering and performance; that much is evident from the fact we sold out our full run of 30 models almost immediately to our very lucky current customers, who have a real treat in store when they get behind the wheel," said Neill Briggs, director of BAC product development
