It seems Volkswagen doesn't want to let the Beetle go. The current generation Volkswagen Beetle hasn't really done as well as the original Beetle but Volkswagen is having another crack at it by presenting this funky Volkswagen Ragster Concept.
The vehicle is said to be exhibited at next year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit where it will either wow Beetle fans or just gather a few meekly-raised eyebrows.
According to recent reports, Volkswagen says the car is not just a redevelopment of the current Beetle; it's a completely new and redesigned car using all-new underpinnings, panels and interior foundations and details.
The car is also said to have all-new dimensions, suspension and engine packages, including a range-topping 2.0-litre, 157kW four-cylinder, and a 1.2-litre, producing a mighty 82kW. There's also a mix of turbo diesel variants planned.
Although the back of it still looks like the front of it, the concept does showcase retro funk with a splash of modern American hotrod in its design language, isolating it from the current generation which will go out of production later this year.
Rumours say this will be the model to replace the current generation, with speculation pointing towards a 2012 release date. No details have been confirmed yet, but what do you think - should some classics be left as classics or is it perfectly acceptable to recreate and recreate, taking on board varying degrees of technology with each generation?
