Toyota Supra GT4 revealed

Toyota Gazoo Racing has revealed the production version of the Supra GT4 race car, set to compete in various championships in 2020.

Based on the Supra GT4 concept revealed at the Geneva motor show in March, the production race car forms part of Toyota’s efforts to “strengthen its focus on customer motorsports”.

GT4 cars are much closer to the road cars they’re based on compared to other GT classes, making them more affordable and therefore more accessible to private race teams.

Plenty of development has gone into the Supra GT4, though, with motorsport-specification additions like a roll cage, natural fibre composite extensions to the front splitter and rear wing, a race-spec fuel tank with fast refuel system, and a FIA-standard racing seat for the driver.

There’s also five-hole 18-inch alloy wheels shod in Pirelli track tyres, an Akrapovic motorsport exhaust system and mechanical lubricants sourced from Ravenol.

Like the road car available to the public, the Supra GT4 is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six, sending drive to the rear wheels via an automatic transmission. Further details like outputs haven’t been confirmed, though it’s worth noting GT4 racing cars are tuned to almost identical performance to highlight driver skill.

The GT4 is the latest in a series of race cars based on the reborn sports coupe, following the Nascar version, and the Super GT model destined for the Japanese GT500 class next year. Another motorsport version also competed at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring, which was heavily based on the Supra GT4 concept.

Toyota says it will reveal selling price, sales area, full specifications and release date later this year.
