2020 BMW X6 revealed, here Q4

BMW has revealed the third-generation X6 SUV Coupe, ahead of its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

In terms of the design, it’s very much like the related X5 from the B-pillar forward, but gets a completely new design further back – the X6 does, however, premiere the option of an illuminated front grille.

Like its wagon-bodied sibling, the new X6 picks up a new architecture, an overhauled interior, and the latest in infotainment and driver assistance technologies.

We’ve noticed BMW’s coupe models have begun to look quite similar at the rear, but the X6 has gone its own way.

The X6 gets a very chunky rear with plenty of creases and contrasting elements in the body work, though the LED tail-light signature echoes the shape of other BMW coupe models like the smaller X4, the 8 Series, and Z4 roadster.

Measuring 4935mm long, 2004mm wide, and 1696mm tall, the new X6 is 26mm longer, 15mm wider and 6mm lower than the outgoing model. The front track is wider (+44mm to 1684mm) and the wheelbase longer (+42mm to 2975mm) too.

Buyers can opt for xLine or M Sport design packages, which either give a more rugged or sporty appearance respectively, while wheels up to 22 inches are available.

Inside, the dashboard and displays have been pretty much lifted out of the new X5, incorporating BMW's latest OS7.0 infotainment software.

The latter consists of two 12.3-inch high-resolution displays, with three years of the connected intelligent personal assistant included in the purchase price – which is also compatible with Microsoft Office 365 and Skype for Business allowing X6 drivers to join teleconferences upon request.

Other infotainment highlights include satellite navigation, two USB ports, bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, access to online concierge and information services, and compatibility with the BMW Digital Key, so buyers can control functions like lock/unlock or turn the engine on via the BMW Connected app on your smartphone.

The BMW Connected app also allows for over-the-air software updates to be downloaded and installed using a smartphone, imported directly via the X6’s built-in SIM card.

In addition to the range of new materials and textures available for the cabin, the X6 comes as standard with Vernasca leather upholstery, with extended Merino hide available as an option.

The rear seats fold 40:20:60 for enhanced practicality when storing longer items with passengers on board, and the boot area measures between 580L and 1525L with the second row in place or folded respectively.

Other available seating features include Multifunction seats, which offer ventilation and massage functions for the driver and front passenger, padded knee rests on the centre console up front (specific to the X6), and “special door pulls”.

The interior trimmings and colour ways depend on whether the owner has specified the xLine or M Sport packages, with available cabin features including four-zone climate control, a panoramic glass sunroof, welcome lighting, thermoelectric front cupholders, glass interior components, a 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, and a wireless phone charge pad.

Four engines will be available with the X6 from launch; two petrols and two diesels, all turbocharged. All versions also come equipped with xDrive all-wheel drive, and an eight-speed ‘Steptronic’ automatic transmission.

Kicking off proceedings is the xDrive30d, featuring a 195kW/620Nm 3.0-litre inline six turbo-diesel. BMW claims 0-100 is dispatched in 6.5 seconds, with top speed rated at 230km/h. The xDrive30d claims to use 6.1-6.6L/100km depending on configuration.

The other diesel in the range is the M50d performance oiler, drawing upon the same 3.0-litre inline six as the 30d but with an extra two turbos strapped onto it, taking the total to three.

Outputs for the M50d are rated at 294kW and 760Nm, with 0-100 taking a brisk 5.2 seconds. Top speed is set at 250km/h, while fuel consumption is rated between 6.9L and 7.2L/100km.

The petrol range starts with the xDrive40i, drawing upon BMW’s familiar 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six making 250kW and 450Nm. With this powertrain, the X6 accelerates from 0-100 in claimed 5.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 250km/h. Fuel consumption is rated at 8.0L-8.6L/100km.

Serving as the performance halo, at least for the time being, is the new X6 M50i. Power in the petrol M Performance variant comes from a stonking 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 making 390kW and 750Nm.

BMW claims the M50i dashes to triple figures in just 4.3 seconds, with top speed rated at 250km/h – all models with this top speed are electronically limited.

Fuel consumption for the M50i is rated between 10.4L-10.7L/100km.

M Performance versions of the X6 come as standard with the M Sport exhaust system for “an unmistakable and emotionally rich aural experience”. Other models are available with an upgraded exhaust as an option or part of the M Sport package.

All versions are compliant with the latest Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard, with petrol models (in Europe, at least) getting particulate filters and diesel versions employing AdBlue injection and an array of catalysts and filters.

The X6 range is also available with the M differential lock on the rear axle, as a standalone option or as part of the M Sport package. Like in other BMW models, this feature distributes torque between the two rear wheels via maximum traction.

Adaptive dampers are standard, while adaptive M suspension with active roll stabilisation, and rear-wheel steering also available as options.

The X6 can also be had with two-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling, which can adjust up to 40mm above and below the standard ride height.

For those not wanting the road-focused M Sport look, the xOffroad package optimises the X6 for regular adventures off the beaten track, incorporating specific drive modes and an electronically controlled rear diff lock in addition to the aforementioned air suspension system.

The xOffroad package is available for both the xDrive30d and xDrive40i, but isn’t available for the M50i and M50d.

BMW plans to bring the X6 to the European market from November, following its showing in Frankfurt.
