Ford Mustang Bullitt: Production extended, but not for Oz

Ford UK has confirmed it has secured an extended production run of the Mustang Bullitt into 2020, but it looks like Australia will miss out on additional allocation.

Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the film Bullitt starring Steve McQueen, the latest iteration of the Mustang Bullitt was a sellout success shortly after it launched in 2018 – Australia received an allocation of 700 units which pretty much sold out shortly after landing in the country.

In the UK, the new production slots have already gone on sale, with deliveries to commence early next year.

Specification carries over, too, meaning the 5.0-litre V8 gets a slight power bump to 345kW (up 6kW) thanks to an Open Air Induction System, an intake manifold, 87mm throttle bodies, and powertrain control module calibration from the Shelby Mustang GT350.

Drive is sent to the rear wheels exclusively via a six-speed manual transmission with cue ball-style shifter, which also features a rev-matching function for smoother downshifts.

Available in classic Dark Highland Green or Shadow Black (in the UK), the Mustang Bullitt also gets 19-inch ‘Torq Thrust’ style alloy wheels, red Brembo brake calipers, a Bullitt fuel cap, Recaro sports seats, interior stitching that mirrors the exterior colour, an individually numbered interior plaque, a 12.3-inch digital LCD instrument cluster, a 1000W B&O Play sound system with 12 speakers, and Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system with FordPass Connect.

Pricing in the UK hasn’t been confirmed, though the Bullitt started at $73,688 before on-road costs when it landed in Australia towards the tail end of 2018.

Australia

Speaking with Drive, Ford Australia’s product communications manager, Damion Smy, said the local division would not be extending its production run of the Mustang Bullitt.

“The Mustang Bullitt was well received by Australian customers, however we have no plans to add to the 700 that were announced in 2018 for our market,” he said.

“We were in fact fortunate to get this allocation, as the UK market’s initial batch was 400 Bullitts, and given the appetite for Mustang in Australia, our shipment of these very special Mustangs reflected that.”
