Photographers have snapped images of the facelifted Audi A5 Sportback during development testing this week, ahead of an anticipated reveal before the end of the year.

Despite the swirly disguise on the front, side skirts and rear, the updated A5 looks like it will get a mild makeover much like the recently-updated A4 sedan and wagon, bringing the medium coupe in line with the company’s latest models.

Up front there’s revised headlights, a more aggressive bumper, and restyled grille. The LED daytime-running light signature has a striped effect like the A4 and other models in the line-up like the Q8.

Similar changes look like they’ll occur at the rear, including restyled tail-lights with a new striped LED signature, new bumper, and revised detailing.

While there are no images of the interior as yet, expect similar revisions to the updated A4, including a much larger 10.1-inch infotainment system with touchscreen functionality and Audi’s latest MMI interface – which should also incorporate wireless Apple CarPlay.

The infotainment system will also drop the outgoing rotary controller, making more room for better storage options on the centre console.

Other updates will include the newest iteration of Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster, Car-to-X communications hardware, along with new colour and trim options inside and out.

Under the bonnet, expect revised engines in both four- and six-cylinder configurations, with 48V mild-hybrid tech to be rolled out across select variants.

Expect a reveal later this year – perhaps at the Frankfurt motor show in September – ahead of a market launch in 2020.
