2021 Volkswagen Golf spied virtually disguise free

With the hatch due to have to global launch later this year, it has been spotted in southern Europe with barely any camouflage.

The delayed eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf has been spied undergoing hot weather testing.

With only a little bit of red tape around the tail-lights, a smidge of black tape on the corners of the headlights and some black plastic surrounding the fog lights, we can now see the Mk 8 Golf in all of its high-resolution glory.

While the styling is a gentle evolution of today's car, it looks as though every exterior panel, except maybe the roof, has been restyled.

The entry-level prototype is fitted with steel wheels, and a new rendition of the company's logo with thinner V and W lettering.

An earlier set of spy photos revealed the new Golf's interior has been given a more extensive makeover with a new design theme, as well as a free-standing infotainment screen and a digital instrumentation cluster.

The car's development has been delayed due to bugs in the new software architecture, which allows for greater online connectivity and over-the-air updates.

Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess is reportedly turning up the heat on management to ensure the new Golf is launched before the end of 2019.

Turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, as well as natural gas, mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains will be offered in the Mark 8. It's likely only petrol motors will be offered Down Under.

The new Golf is currently scheduled to arrive in local showrooms during the fourth quarter of 2020.
