Details are beginning to emerge about the company's new MLA platform, and the models which will use it.

The next-generation Jaguar XJ may be pitched as a Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan competitor, but will be built on a platform that supports internal combustion engines.

A source has told Automotive News the next-generation XJ will be based on Jaguar Land Rover's new MLA (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) platform instead of the unique architecture employed by the I-Pace crossover.

At launch the new XJ will reportedly sport only electric drivetrains. The MLA platform supports battery sizes up to 90kWh, allowing for driving ranges of around 470 kilometres.

Part way through its lifecycle, straight-six engines will be added to the XJ range.

By using the MLA platform, the new XJ misses out on the packaging benefits of an architecture designed solely for electric vehicles.

On the flip side, the automaker will consolidate five of today's architectures onto one flexible platform, improving economies of scale and making future development easier.

The next-generation Range Rover (current model pictured above) and Range Rover Sport will also be based on MLA, and both will be available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

MLA-based plug-in hybrids will be equipped with a 13.1kWh battery good for a driving range of around 50km.

In a presentation to investors, Jaguar Land Rover confirmed one Range Rover model will be offered with pure-electric drivetrain, although it didn't name which one.
