Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi signs autonomous car deal with Google

Waymo will work with the automaker alliance on developing self-driving car services in France and Japan.

Waymo, Google's self-driving car unit, has signed a deal to commercialise autonomous vehicle services with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

According to the companies, this new agreement is "exclusive... for an initial period" and will see the partners "explore all aspects" of autonomous vehicle services in France and Japan, including passenger services and cargo delivery.

Waymo and the alliance say they will work "together to research commercial, legal and regulatory issues related to driverless transportation-as-a-service offerings" in their Renault and Nissan's home markets.

Waymo and the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance may in the future broaden their partnership to other markets except China.

"This is an ideal opportunity for Waymo to bring our autonomous technology to a global stage, with an innovative partner," John Krafcik, Waymo's CEO, said in a prepared statement.

Currently Waymo has begun limited commercial service in Phoenix, Arizona with a fleet of modified Chrysler Pacifica (above) plug-in hybrid people movers. The company also has 20,000 Jaguar I-Pace electric crossovers on order.

Waymo began life as the Google self-driving car project and primarily used a fleet of heavily customised Lexus RX crossovers. Waymo was spun off into its own self-contained division within Google's empire at the end of 2016.
