2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 engine details revealed

Power and torque figures for the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 have been confirmed ahead of the car's release later this year.

Under the bonnet is a 5.2-litre supercharged V8 with 567kW (760hp) of power and 847Nm of torque.

That's significantly more than the 522kW (700hp) or so the company promised when it unveiled the GT500 at this year's Detroit motor show.

In January, Ford said the GT500 would also feature a carbon-fibre driveshaft and a seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch transmission.

At the show it claimed the GT500 will have a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) time of around 3.5 seconds, and a standing quarter mile (400m) time under 11 seconds. It's not clear if these times will improve due to the car's increased power.

In addition to its stonking V8 engine, the GT500 will feature wider front wheel arches, a gaping front grille, a large rear wing, bonnet louvres, and many other changes.

To put the new GT500 into perspective, the Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye has a 595kW/959Nm 6.2-litre supercharged V8, an eight-speed automatic, and a 0-60mph time of 3.4 seconds.

Meanwhile the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is powered by a 480kW/860Nm supercharged 6.2-litre V8. Equipped with a six-speed manual the ZL1 can be complete the 0-60mph dash in 3.7 seconds, while the eight-speed automatic version needs just 3.5s.
