2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe (officially) revealed

After leaking in detail last week, the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe has been officially revealed in full ahead of its arrival late in 2019.

The four-door coupe (or should that be sloping-roofed sedan?) takes the 8 Series and stretches it in every direction. It has a wheelbase 201mm longer than the two-door, and the body is 231mm longer in total. It's also 30mm wider than the regular 8 Series. In other words, she big.

Perks of the bigger dimensions include more space in the rear, bigger door apertures, and more luggage space (440L) in the auto-opening boot. The outside rear seats are individual units as standard, complete with integrated headrests and BMW's higher-end Vernasca leather trim, and the bench folds 40/20/40.

Although the central rear seat is technically "suitable for use on short journeys", it'll definitely be reserved for the least-favourite child. Depending on how much you want to spoil the kids, owners are able to option four-zone climate control and rear sun blinds.

A panoramic glass roof is standard, too, linking the rear and front windscreens with one huge glass panel. Up front things are identical to the regular 8er, which means BMW OS7.0 as standard, all kinds of fancy materials, and a modern take on the classic BMW centre console.

Three powertrains will be offered at launch: the 840i (250kW/500Nm) in both rear- and all-wheel drive, the M850i xDrive (390kW/750Nm) and the 840d xDrive (235kW/680Nm).

Expect to see an M8 and M8 Competition at some point, too, although BMW hasn't pulled back the sheet just yet.

Standard safety equipment will include autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, a reversing camera with sensors, while options will include adaptive cruise with stop/go, reversing assistant, and a surround-view camera with 3D view will all be offered as options overseas.

Expect to see a more generous list of standard inclusions in Australia, although pricing and specs are yet to be confirmed.

The 2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe will be here late in 2019. An official model range hasn't been confirmed, but using the two-door as a guide, expect to see the M850i xDrive and 840i.
