GM might revive Hummer as an electric vehicle brand – report

The dormant Hummer brand could be resuscitated as part of a General Motors push into the electric vehicle sector.

Sources have told Bloomberg GM is considering reviving the Hummer marque for use on all-electric off-road vehicles.

The automaker is currently working on two major electric vehicle projects: BEV3 will deliver a platform for small and mid-size cars and crossovers, while the other is working on an architecture for pickup trucks, large vehicles and off-roaders. We presume any Hummer revival will use this latter platform.

Mark Reuss, GM's president, played a straight bat when questioned about Hummer's potential revival. He told the business publication he "loves" Hummer, but cautioned: "I’m not sure. We’re looking at everything.”

If approved, it's not clear when the revived Hummer brand will hit the market. The first BEV3 products are expected to enter showrooms in the early 2020s, with the larger architecture following on, possibly, around the middle of the decade.

The Hummer brand was closed down in 2010 as part of GM's government-assisted bankruptcy proceedings. With petrol prices high and environmental concerns pressing, GM was unable to find a suitable buyer for the brand.

Although it stopped production of Hummer's line of SUVs, GM retained the rights to the brand.
