VinFast Fadil: Vietnamese car maker goes mainstream

The Vietnamese manufacturer hopes its rebadged Opel can help it win buyers from Toyota, Kia and Mitsubishi.

The VinFast Fadil is now available through the company's 32 dealerships across Vietnam.

If the Fadil looks vaguely familiar, that's because it's basically an Opel Karl/Vauxhall Viva with a new asymmetric grille and some fresh badges.

In order to tap into the country's thirst for crossover vehicles, the Fadil is actually based on the Rocks version of the Karl/Viva, which features raised suspension, and grey plastic wheel arch protectors and lower body cladding.

For Vietnam, the Fadil comes standard with a 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 73kW at 6200rpm, and 128Nm at 4400rpm. It is connected to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission.

Measuring 3676mm long, 1632mm wide, 1495mm tall, and riding on a 2385mm wheelbase, the Fadil should be compact enough navigate through some of the country's more crowded thoroughfares.

Available features include six airbags, electronic brake force distribution, traction and stability control, roll-over mitigation, and hill start assist.

Buyers who put an order in now qualify for a preferential starting price of 395 million dong ($24,600). Later the car's base price will rise to 465 million dong ($29,000).

Deliveries of the Fadil begin this week, and the car has been available for test drives since the beginning of June.

According to Best Selling Cars Blog, the top five vehicles in Vietnam in May 2019 were the Toyota Vios, Mitsubishi Xpander, Honda CR-V, Toyota Fortuner and Ford Ranger.

The new Fadil is quite a world away from the VinFast's two other launch models, the Lux A2.0 and Lux SA2.0. Both of these cars feature bodies designed by Pininfarina, and are based on superseded BMW platforms.
