Mercedes-Benz G-Class ‘Stronger Than Time’ Edition revealed

Trio of special editions mark anniversaries for both the standard and AMG G-Class, featuring special equipment and the exclusive option of the 400d inline six diesel.

Mercedes-Benz has announced three limited-edition versions of the iconic G-Class off-roader, all wearing Stronger Than Time nomenclature.

The first edition celebrates 40 years of the standard G-Class, available in two engine variants – G400d and G500. It's the first time the company's new 3.0-litre inline six turbo-diesel has been available in the G-Class, making 243kW and 700Nm.

Meanwhile, the G500 version features a version of the 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 that is common to most of the AMG 63 range, which makes 310kW and 610Nm in this tune.

Model-specific standard equipment includes the AMG Line package, meaning flared wheel arches, sportier bumpers, 'Mercedes-Benz' brake calipers, and a sports exhaust system for the G500 version. There's also a flat-bottom sports steering wheel, and the standard fitment of the Stainless Steel Package and Night Package which bring stainless steel exterior components complimented by darkened body accents.

In addition to the extra specification outlined above, all Stronger Than Time Editions pick up the Driving Assistance Package, adaptive dampers, the Parking Package with 360-degree cameras, multibeam LED headlights, the Widescreen Cockpit dual-display digital instrument and infotainment layout, Active Multicontour Seat Package, Burmester surround sound system, ambient interior lighting in 64 colours, and a sliding electric sunroof with rain-sensor closing function and obstruction sensor.

Rounding out the highlights are 'G' logos and 'Stronger Than Time' projected by the surround lamps, with the same lettering adorning the outside of the A-pillar and the front leather-wrapped grab handles.

A range of paint and upholstery combinations can be specified, including metallic and matte body paints, along with a selection of nappa leather trims.

Mercedes-AMG, meanwhile, is offering the G63 Stronger Than Time Edition as well, commemorating 20 years of the performance G-Class.

Power comes from a 430kW/850Nm version of the 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 used in the G500, mated with a nine-speed automatic and rear-biased all-wheel drive with three diff locks.

The company says the AMG G63 sprints from 0-100 in 4.5 seconds, with top speed limited to 220km/h in standard guise of 240km/h with the AMG Driver's Package.

Compared to the non-AMG special editions, the AMG G63 gets a dark chrome AMG grille, matte chrome exterior accents, 22-inch alloys in matte black, carbon-fibre ornamentation in the cabin, full nappa leather trim, and Stronger Than Time lettering engraved on the grab handle on the front passenger's side.

Australia

Speaking CarAdvice, Mercedes-Benz's local product communications manager, Ryan Lewis, said there's "nothing we can confirm at this stage".

"Demand has been strong for the G63 Edition 1 offered in Australia," he continued, "and delivering vehicles to those customers is our priority at the moment."
