2020 Mercedes-AMG GLB35 hits the ‘Ring

Powered-up seven-seat SUV snapped on German racetrack ahead of anticipated reveal at the end of the year.

The upcoming Mercedes-AMG GLB35 has been spied during performance testing at the famed Nurburgring circuit in Germany, just days after the standard version was revealed to the public.

Despite the heavy camouflage and some false body cladding, we have a pretty good idea of what the GLB35 will look like – take the boxy dimensions of the standard GLB and put an AMG bodykit and wheels on, basically.

We also know what will power the new performance SUV, too. Like the wider AMG 35 line-up, the GLB35 will draw upon a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine making 225kW and 400Nm, sent to a 4Matic all-wheel drive system via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Given its larger dimensions and likely heavier body, we'd argue the GLB will be a little slower to 100km/h from a standstill than its smaller stablemates, but expect performance to be brisk. The GLB35 should hit triple figures in a little over 5.0 seconds.

As for equipment and technology, the GLB35 will get AMG-specific content like sports seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel, unique trim and veneer options, and special menus in the MBUX infotainment system. AMG badges should be liberally applied inside and out.

The AMG GLB35 should be revealed in full before the end of the year, ahead of a sales launch in 2020. Given Australia has to wait until the third quarter of 2020 for the standard GLB line-up, the AMG 35 version won't hit our shores until at least then.
