Aston Martin’s new factory produces its first car, a DBX prototype
The brand's newly-constructed St Athan factory will begin cranking out the new DBX crossover during the first half of 2020.
Aston Martin's new Welsh factory has produced its first car ahead of series production kicking off next year.
Located around in the town of St Athan, the new factory is around 20 kilometres south-west of the Welsh capital Cardiff.
The 36 hectare site was purchased from the Ministry of Defence in 2016, and since then the automaker has converted much of site, including its "super hangars" into a modern manufacturing facility with plenty of glass walls.
In addition to being the sole production facility for the DBX, St Athan will also be the manufacturing base for the revived Lagonda brand, as well as the company's "home of electrification".
The DBX will likely be powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 sourced from Mercedes-AMG, and already employed by the Vantage and DB11.
Spy photos of the crossover's interior have shown plenty of components, including screens and switchgear, taken from the Mercedes-Benz parts pool.
It's not known if these pieces will appear in the final product, or if they are placeholder items being used for development and testing.
The DBX will be unveiled at the end of 2019, with full scale production slated to begin during the first half of 2020.
