Alpine A110: Lighter special coming to Le Mans

The A110 GT4 (as we think it'll be known) is almost ready for a reveal, but details about what will differentiate it from the regular car aren't exactly clear.

Alpine is preparing a more focused version of its A110 for Le Mans, teasing the GT4-inspired coupe on social media.

The new A110 variant, which was spied testing at the Nurburgring in May, is expected to lob with a more powerful version of the standard car's 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, potentially making a Megane RS-aping 220kW.

At the moment, the car makes 185kW and 320Nm. The only potential problem is the gearbox. Although they're both dual-clutch transmissions, the RS's gearbox is a larger six-speed unit than the A110's seven-speeder.

Even if there's no power bump, we're expecting the A110 GT4 (as it could be known) to be a lighter, more focused proposition than the standard car. Previous spy pictures have revealed a lower ride height, more aggressive splitter and racy rear wing are all being tested.

There isn't much superfluous gear for Alpine to drop in search of easy weight savings, but expect the GT4 to be lighter than its stablemate, be it through carbon bodywork or equipment omissions. We'll have to wait and see on that one.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans kicks off on June 15, so we don't have long to wait for full details on the A110 GT4.
