2020 Audi A6 allroad revealed, here next year

Following the reveal of the sedan and Avant wagon variants of its new-generation A6, Audi has released the first official details and images of the 2020 A6 allroad wagon-turned-SUV.

Audi plans an Australian launch in the first half of 2020.

The new fourth-generation A6 allroad arrives in time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Audi’s allroad nameplate and promises to be the most powerful version since the original 4.2-litre V8 model.

In keeping with a number of recent Audi introductions, the new A6 allroad features an all-diesel powertrain line-up, with three V6 TDI engines on offer, all measuring 3.0 litres in capacity.

The range opens with the 45 TDI, featuring a 170kW and 500Nm state of tune and capable of dashing 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, with claimed consumption of between 5.8-5.9 litres per 100 kilometres depending on specification. European pricing sees this model start from €61,500 ($99,130).

The mid-range 50 TDI steps up to 210kW and 620Nm, dropping 0-100 sprint times to 5.9 seconds without harming fuel consumption which remains at 5.8-5.69 L/100km. The flagship 55 TDI version puts out 257kW and 700Nm, taking its tune from the recently-revealed S6 and S7 range (though makes no mention of the electric powered compressor fitted to the performance versions), and is able to run from 0-100 km/h in 5.2 seconds (versus 5.0 seconds for the S6 TDI sedan), with a claimed 6.4-6.6 L/100km fuel figure.

All three engine options are paired as standard to an eight-speed automatic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive with selective torque control which uses brake pressure on the inside wheels to distribute torque to the outer wheels at speed for improved handling. An optionally available variable sport differential is also available for the rear axle.

Audi’s 48-volt mild-hybrid technology is included across the range, with a belt-driven alternator starter capable of recovering up to 8kW of power during braking, feeding a 10Ah battery which can then contribute power back under acceleration or allow the diesel engine to remain inactive at speeds below 22km/h.

Also standard, adaptive air suspension with a standard 139mm of ground clearance. Variable ride height allows the A6 allroad to be raised by up to 45mm for rough road work at speeds below 35 km/h, or up to 30mm higher than standard in off road mode at speeds up to 80km/h, while at speeds above 120km/h the suspension will automatically lower itself by 15mm below the standard ride height.

Other off-road-capable features include standard hill descent control, tilt angle warnings should the vehicle approach its limits on uneven terrain, optimised traction and stability control systems, and ABS brakes with the ability to detect loose surfaces and adapt brake holding to suit.

Externally the A6 allroad sets itself apart from the regular A6 Avant with familiar crossover styling cues including additional lower body cladding and wheel arch mouldings, offered in grey, gloss black or body coloured finishes, four-post roof rails, unique front and rear bumpers with faux skid-plate inserts, and a wide-spaced egg crate grille with chrome vertical bars.

Key dimensions see the A6 allroad measure 4.95 metres long with a 2.93m wheelbase, standard running height is 1.5m tall while the width measures 1.9m. Internally up to 565 litres of luggage space is available to the rear seats with 1680 litres available with the rear seats folded.

A 40:20:40 folding rear seat, powered tailgate, and included cargo rail system are also included as standard equipment.

Standard wheels measure 18 inches shod with 225/55 tyres, though Audi Sport wheels of up to 21 inches are optionally available.

Internal highlights include Audi’s latest-generation MMI infotainment which combines a 10.1-inch infotainment top screen, an 8.6-inch lower display for climate controls and text input, and a 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit digital driver's display in its flagship form.

Three interior colour schemes will be offered: black, pearl beige or okapi brown, available in standard cloth trim with partial leather elements, or optional Valcona leather. Graphite grey, aluminium, or a choice of two wood finishes are also available inside.

On overseas models the options list will extend to fragranced and ionised interior air filtering, heated and cooled, multi-contour massaging or sports front seats, a panoramic glass sunroof, a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio, configurable ambient interior lighting, and remote access via the myAudi app for compatible Android smartphones.

Standard progressive steering can also be upgraded to dynamic all-wheel steering which turns the rear wheels up to five degrees opposite to the fronts at speeds below 60 km/h for tighter turning or with the front wheels up to two degrees at higher speeds to enhance stability.

Australia

Audi Australia has earmarked the A6 allroad for local introduction in the first half of 2020. Details of engines and specifications for Australia will be revealed closer the on sale date.

Stay tuned for all the latest.
