2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB teased

The Mercedes-Benz GLB has been previewed with a shadowy teaser image on the company's Twitter account, ahead of a full reveal likely slated for later this year.

In a tweet (bottom), the German marque posted the above photo accompanied by the caption: "The new Mercedes-Benz GLB: intelligent like a smartphone and as practical as a multitool!".

We've already got a good idea of what the GLB will look like, given the Concept GLB revealed in Shanghai earlier this year looked mighty close to production, though Mercedes-Benz looks almost ready to present the final production version which is likely to go on sale globally before the end of the year.

Filling the gap between the baby GLA and the mid-sized GLC, the GLB will offer up to three rows of seating and a spacious interior thanks to its boxy proportions, and it appears the new model will look something like a mini GLE or GLS.

The concept car (above) measured 4634mm long, 1890mm wide and 1900mm tall, which is in the ballpark of something like the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace. A 2829mm wheelbase also means plenty of legroom in the second row, which should appeal to chauffer-obsessed China.

We know the new SUV will offer the company's intelligent MBUX infotainment interface, and a dashboard layout pretty much lifted from those other compact models – expect a very close resemblance to the related B-Class inside.

Mercedes-Benz said the concept version of the GLB could accommodate up to four child seats across the second and third rows, while the rearmost pews have enough space for "two medium-sized occupants".

Under the skin, the GLB will ride on a version of the small car architecture that underpins the new A-Class, B-Class and CLA.

Expect a range of four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines to be offered depending on market, with plug-in hybrid power to be available at some point, while an all-electric EQB is said to be in the pipeline for a 2021 launch.

The concept was powered by an 'M260' 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine shared with the sporty A250, making 165kW of power and 350Nm of torque, sent to a 4Matic all-wheel drive system via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic.

It's anticipated the GLB could debut in production guise at the Frankfurt motor show in September, before hitting European showrooms at the end of the year.

We'd expect an Australian introduction sometime in 2020, though we'll have to wait until the official reveal for more details.
