2020 Skoda Octavia spied again

Next-gen wagon spotted again near the 'Ring, ahead of its global reveal at the Frankfurt motor show.

The next-generation Skoda Octavia has been spied again, this time around the Nurburgring race track in Germany.

Following the set of images last week in the European Alps, this prototype wears similar fake panels that disguise the final design, though we can see the new model will grow compared to the vehicle currently on sale, and feature a design inspired by the larger Superb.

It appears the bulk of the fake panels are concentrated around the front and rear ends, including the bumpers, bonnet, and tailgate. Both sets of light units appear to be wearing camouflage, too.

The next-gen Octavia will roll on a revised version of the Volkswagen Group's familiar MQB underpinnings – potentially dubbed MQB 'Evo' – which will be shared with the next Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf.

Compared to its relatives, though, the Skoda looks set to grow in both width and length, likely to better compete with medium-sized passenger vehicles now that the Scala small hatch has been added to the portfolio.

Given the shared platform with the new Audi and Volkswagen small cars, the Octavia will likely offer a range of new electrification options depending on market, including 48V mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

We're also expecting the latest and greatest driver assistance technologies from the Volkswagen Group, likely incorporating Level 2 autonomous driving capability.

Additionally, the Octavia could pick up the raft of digital heavy cabin features set to be available in the new Golf – one of these likely being an intelligent infotainment system a-la Mercedes-Benz's MBUX system.

Both 'liftback' sedan and 'Combi' wagon body styles are expected to continue, along with a jacked-up 'Scout' crossover wagon.

We know the new Octavia will be revealed at the Frankfurt motor show in September, coinciding with the namplate's 60th anniversary.

As for Australia, Skoda's local communications boss, Paul Pottinger, indicated the new Octavia should lob Down Under during the first quarter of 2021.

"Production starts in the back end of 2020 for Q1 2021 launch," he said in March. Stay tuned for all the latest updates over the coming months.
