Lexus growth continues in declining market

Japanese luxury marque posts 5.9% growth in May, an all-time record for the month.

Lexus Australia has set another sales record, despite continued decline in overall new vehicle sales.

The monthly total of 860 registrations for the month of May is a 5.9% gain on the same month last year, which was also the previous record for the fifth month (812 vehicles).

May also proved to be Lexus' most successful month of 2019, up 19.6% over the previous 2019 best of 719 sales.

Key contributors in the company's line-up included its SUV range and the ES300h sedan. The SUV family – comprised of the UX, NX, RX and LX – managed a total of 662 sales in May, 10% up on the same month in 2018.

Leading the crossover charge was the NX, which totalled 284 registrations last month, followed by the larger RX (199 sales, above) and the baby UX (145 sales). The NX was actually down compared to May last year (-25.8%), though the RX grew (+21.3%) and the UX is purely additional volume since it only launched in November.

Also showing significant growth was the ES300h hybrid sedan (top), which posted a jump of 160.9% with 60 sales (albeit off a low base), while the recently-refreshed RC sports coupe saw 30% growth (26 sales), again off a low base. It's the strongest January-May period for the ES line in five years.

The growth from these models offset some sharp declines elsewhere in the Lexus stable, with the CT (-78.7%), GS (-50%), LC (-42.9%), LS (-80%), and LX (-38.2%) all well down month on month. It's worth noting the LX has had its best January-May period in 16 years (197 vehicles) despite the monthly decline in May.

However, year-to-date the Japanese marque is on par with its record-breaking 2018 result for this stage of the year, sitting at 3838 registrations as of May 30.

"Positive signs of renewed customer interest in the luxury sector encourage us as we move towards achieving all-time record sales in the first half of this year," said Scott Thompson, CEO for Lexus Australia.

Lexus hopes to break a first-half sales record at the end of June, launching its end-of-financial-year 'step up' drive-away campaign across its SUV and IS sedan range in the lead-up to June 30.
