Audi Q4 e-tron to be built in China – report

Audi will commence production of its new EV based on the Q4 e-tron concept later this year, with new reports claiming some output of all-electric crossover will come from China.

Industry journal Automotive News Europe cites Chinese news website Sina.com, saying the Q4 e-tron – or whatever the market version is called – will be the first Audi model to be built at the SAIC-VW joint-venture's EV factory in Shanghai.

Production is scheduled to commence in November, with the factory's output rated at up to 300,000 units per annum across the Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi brands.

It appears the China-produced Q4 e-tron's will stay in China, though, with European models (and presumably other global markets) to source their EV crossovers from the VW Group's Zwickau facility in Germany, where the German group has invested €1.2 billion ($1.93b) to retool its production lines for MEB-based electric vehicles.

First revealed at the 2019 Geneva motor show in March, the Q4 e-tron concept featured a 225kW dual-motor electric drivetrain, good for a claimed 0-100 time in a hot hatch-rivalling 6.3 seconds.

An 82kWh battery pack mounted under the floor of the vehicle allows for a driving range of 'more than' 450 kilometres on the stricter WLTP testing regime, and can also be fast-charged to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes.

The production version of the Q4 e-tron is expected to be revealed later this year – potentially as early as the Frankfurt motor show in September – before going on sale at the end 2020 in Europe.

Audi Australia is yet to confirm whether we'll see the Q4 e-tron Down Under at this stage, though given the company's electrification push globally, it's likely we'll see the new EV in Australian showrooms sometime in 2021.

The company has committed to offering 12 EV models around the world by 2025, including the e-tron quattro and e-tron Sportback SUVs, along with the upcoming e-tron GT sports car and e-tron Avant wagon.
