2019 Mercedes-AMG CLA35 Shooting Brake revealed

Joining the A35 hatchback and sedan, along with the CLA35 four-door coupe, the Shooting Brake adds a wagon-bodied variant to the range.

Under the bonnet is the familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, making 225kW at 5800rpm and 400Nm between 3000 and 4000rpm. Mercedes-AMG claims a 0-100 sprint in 4.9 seconds, and a top speed electronically limited to 250km/h.

Drive is sent to a 4Matic variable all-wheel drive system via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with steering-mounted paddles and launch control.

Fuel use is rated at 7.4-7.5L/100km depending on wheel and tyre configuration, while CO2 emissions come it at 168-171g/km.

Distinguishing features compared to the standard CLA Shooting Brake (which isn't coming to Australia), include sportier AMG components including the front grille, bodykit, standard 18-inch alloys (19-inch optional), rounded dual exhaust outlets, and a rear diffuser.

Buyers can choose from several design packages and alloy wheel options to further personalise their vehicle, including the dark-themed AMG Night Package, and the racy AMG Aerodynamics Package.

Inside, the CLA35 Shooting Brake picks up Artico leatherette/Dinamica microfibre trim with red top-stitching, front sports seats, high-gloss black trim elements, brushed stainless steel pedals, and an AMG sports steering wheel.

The dual-screen MBUX intelligent infotainment system also gets AMG-specfiic content, as per other AMG 35 models, including a lap timer, G-force meter, and more. Drivers can also use the central touchscreen to access AMG Track Pace telemetry data.

Under the skin, the company says it's used "specific measures" to strengthen the front section of the vehicle to enhance turn-in along with the tie and camber of chassis components. There's an aluminium construction plate screwed underneath the engine for increased torsional rigidity up front, bolstered by two additional diagonal braces at the front of the underbody.

Speaking with Drive, Mercedes-Benz Australia's head of media relations and product communications, Jerry Stamoulis, said: "As announced previously we won’t be offering the Shooting Brake variants in Australia, however the AMG CLA35 4MATIC four-door coupe will be offered in our market". Bummer.

The CLA35 coupe is due to hit local showrooms during the fourth quarter of 2019.
