Skoda Vision GT concept debuts in Shenzhen

Skoda has revealed the Vision GT concept for the Shenzhen motor show in China, previewing a new crossover model it plans to introduce to the Middle Kingdom before year's end.

First previewed a month ago in designer sketches, the Vision GT concept is said to be the precursor to the Kamiq GT, a sportier, more dynamic-looking version of the Chinese-market Kamiq that's due late in 2019.

Unlike the global version of the Kamiq – due here early next year – which rides on the Volkswagen Group's ubiquitous MQB architecture, the model available in China is underpinned by the much older PQ34 platform, which first debuted with the original Audi A3 in 1996.

The Kamiq GT is expected to use the same basic component set, though like its more practical sibling should offer a range of driver assistance and infotainment technologies that are far more modern.

As for the styling, the Vision GT concept has a far more direct link to the company's European range, including the Scala and global version of the Kamiq, namely in the slim headlights and bold, upright front grille.

The muscular haunches and flared guards add to the more athletic stance, as do the large turbine-style alloy wheels.

It's expected the production model won't be toned down too much from this concept, which seems to be company practice really – the Kodiaq and Euro-market Kamiq, for example, stayed very true to their concept previews.

No images of the interior have surfaced just yet, nor do we know much about the new car's powertrain.

However, it's reported the production model should offer the Chinese Kamiq's 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, which makes 109hp (81kW) and 150Nm, and is hooked to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic – we don't know if it's a DSG or torque converter, though, and the Chinese site literally translates to "six-block hand-in-one".
