Apple CarPlay facelift unveiled

Last month Google unveiled a significant design update for its Android Auto smartphone mirroring system.

So it's no surprise Apple used today's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote to whip the covers off revisions to its CarPlay setup

While the upcoming version of Android Auto has a significant design change, the latest iteration of CarPlay features a less dramatic overhaul.

Possibly the biggest update is the ability to have info from multiple apps displayed side-by-side, which should be a huge benefit to those with widescreen infotainment displays.

Engaging the Siri voice recognition system via CarPlay will now no longer take up an entire screen. Siri on CarPlay can now also interact with third-party apps, including Pandora and Waze.

With iOS 13 Siri has been upgraded with a completely digital, but smoother sounding and better flowing, voice.

Starting with the next-generation of the mobile device operating system, Apple Maps will incorporate new mapping data, a Google Street View-like feature, and a ground-up code redesign.

Apple Maps' updated app, views and data sets will beginning rolling out during 2019 in the US. The rest of the world will follow some time in 2020.

Other CarPlay changes include a revamped Music app, which places a greater emphasis on album art, location-based notifications, and a new Calendar app that allows to the driver to dial directly into meetings or get directions to upcoming appointments via a single touch.

The new version of CarPlay will roll out as part of iOS 13, which can be installed on supported iPhones from the third quarter of 2019.
