Mercedes-Benz to launch EQB, EQE next decade

Mercedes-Benz is pushing forward with its electrification onslaught, with EQB and EQE models due to arrive in 2021 and 2022 respectively – according to a new report.

The UK's Autocar cites company insiders claiming the pair will follow the EQC, EQA, EQS and EQV to market, bolstering the company's all-electric EQ-branded line-up.

Much like how the EQC shares its underpinnings with the GLC and C-Class, the EQA with the A-Class, and the EQV with the V-Class, the EQB and EQE are expected to have a lot in common with the GLB and E-Class respectively.

According to the British publication, the EQB will feature an 'aerodynamically optimised' version of the GLB's boxy body, and offer a range of up to 310 miles (499km). The EQB will join the combustion-powered GLB range, along with an anticipated plug-in hybrid version.

It's believed the EQB will draw upon a "further developed" version of the all-electric drivetrain that will power the upcoming EQA electric hatchback, which should include a dual-motor setup (one for each axle) and a battery pack of "at least 60kWh".

Further details are to be confirmed, so it's unclear whether the EQB will retain its combustion-powered sibling's available seven-seat layout inside.

As for the EQE, it's expected to take the form of an "upmarket saloon" to take on the likes of the Tesla Model S when it hits the market around 2022.

"The EQE will be shorter in length than today’s E-Class but offer space comparable to the existing S-Class,” an unnamed source told Autocar.

Like other EQ models, the EQE should wear a version of the E-Class body that has been optimised for maximum aerodynamic efficiency, while also featuring distinct EQ styling elements like the large, closed front grille.

It's also reported the EQE will run a dual-motor electric powertrain from launch (a rear-wheel drive version is rumoured, but not confirmed), with a projected driving range of 373mi (600km).

Both the EQB and EQE are part of the German marque's planned 10 new all-electric models by the end of 2022.
