BMW previews iNext curved-screen technology

BMW is preparing a new curved display for its 2021 iNext technology flagship, as it looks for new ways to create 'driver-oriented' interiors in the age of widescreen displays.

The company says the "single-section display surface creates a particularly harmonious effect, lending additional visual emphasis to the ergonomically optimised controls".

In real-world speak, that means it should be a slicker, cleaner way to deliver all the information currently shown across two (or more) displays.

BMW interiors have had a centre console slanted towards the driver for a long time, and a curved single screen allows the brand to maintain that characteristic in the modern age.

According to the media release, the display is mounted to appear like it's floating, framed by a slim magnesium bracket with its roots in mobile phone design.

“The Curved Display in the BMW iNext takes us to the next level of driver-oriented controls,” said Robert Irlinger, head of BMW i.

“The new display unit enables intuitive, natural and ergonomically perfect use of the touch function.”

When it lobs in 2021, the iNext is expected to have 600km of range from its fifth-generation electric drivetrain. It should offer Level 3 autonomous driving, along with access to a broad range of online functions.
